I went to visit some one room flats with Uncle Wee Lin, chairman of Sunlove twice this year, once last month and another yesterday.
I can see that the tenants of these flats are worried : worried about being retrenched one day, worried about not being able to adequately feed their children, worried about loneliness and worried about not having enough to tide over any unforeseen circumstances.
However, most of them do not idly stay at home and hope for assistance to fall from the sky. Instead, they try very hard to earn a little supplementary income with any basic skills that they have, in order to afford an extra tin of Milo, see a doctor when they fall ill or buy textbooks for their children.
Like what Uncle Wee Lin said : “While we can always give them fish to eat, we should equip them with fishing rods so that they never go hungry.”, which perfectly sums up why I like Sunlove’s methods of providing for the needy.

Mdm Habibah (76) of Chai Chee is good at making delicious Malay cakes and desserts. She suffered three heart attacks and her husband has passed away last year, leaving her with 3 sons, 3 daughters and 11 grand children. She receives 100 plus every month but with her current medical condition, she needs to visit to the doctor once every few months. She hopes to sell curry puffs, kueh, etc for customers who can do self-pickups or are planning to hold gatherings or parties.
Looking at her smiling face, Sunlove volunteer Rita assures me that she can cook very well.
